Cooking is only the first criteria for a culinary degree. Also involved in receiving a culinary degree is understand the different foods and knowing how to use them. There is a tremendous amount of details and information to learn when faced with all the world has to offer in the food industry. What spices, oils, condiments, to use; what cooking technique, timing, heat level; quantities needed for a small group or a huge crowd. The possibilities go on and on. The aspiring cook who has their heart set on a culinary degree must be prepared to boil, broil, steam, sauté, smother, fry, chop, puree, blend, and gently stir together all the information that will be included in the recipe for a chef.
A culinary degree opens the door to many career opportunities. Restaurants, hotels, resorts, catering, institution services, personal chef are some of the obvious choices for a chef. This allows the culinary artist to perform their meal-time magic in their own personal establishment or in the employ of another business. Depending on the arena, the food preparation may be for a single person or for a thousand-seat banquet.
Another area where a culinary degree can be put to use is in the area of research and development. Many corporations and food service industries spend a great deal of money on providing food that meets a certain criteria. There are also areas of work for the culinary degree chef in restaurant management, as well as, in media presentation of food, such as cookbooks, photography, and visual impact of food on television.
America loves food and loves the people who purchase the food, cook the food, and serve the food. Sometimes there’s nothing quite like a good old boloney sandwich, but if the choice is boloney or filet mignon, guess which one is picked the most often. A culinary degree allows an individual to provide a service that everyone uses. We all eat and the better the food, the better we like it!
