DISTANCE DEGREE

Distance degrees continue to be a very popular and efficient way to earn a degree in a non-traditional setting. To adapt to the need of the distance student, methods are always being analyzed and modified. Currently, the internet and two video technologies are the most often used methods. One technology is the asynchronous instruction where the student can receive their instruction by internet any time of the day or night, totally at their discretion and convenience. The second is synchronous instruction where the student has a scheduled time and location to be signed in on the internet for classes. They both have their advantages. The asynchronous method works well for the student who is self-motivated and needs to schedule their instructional time at odd hours. The synchronous allows the student to interact with the professor and other students through the internet at a specific time. This allows for a more social network during the learning process.

Public institutions have been more open with providing distance degrees than private institutions. It has become a part of their investment in education and their desire to attract more students. Just a few years ago, statistics showed that there were over three million students who had enrolled in distance learning courses in the United States in two-year and four-year institutions. These students were enrolled in over one hundred thousand courses.

The assets of distance degree programs to the student are remarkable. For less money, less time, more convenience, and more flexibility, the student is able to enroll, study, learn, and receive a degree that will enrich their educational resume. The assets to the learning institutions are also of great value. No longer are colleges and universities bound by the number of chairs available in a lecture hall, but they can provide quality education to an almost unlimited number of students.
