DISTANCE LEARNING COLLEGE
Finding a distance learning college is the easy part. Deciding on a distance learning college can be more challenging. There are over 150 college that offer over 2,000 distance learning degrees. Most of the colleges that offer distance learning degrees also have actual campuses where a traditional, classroom experience can be achieved. Many of the same professors that are teaching in the classroom are also the instructors for the distance learning student. The professor is directing a variety of learning methods to accommodate the variety of the students under his tutelage. This diversity in the professors capabilities is an added bonus to the distance learning student. They are receiving the expertise of a professional educator who is dealing with students on a personal basis and who is aware of the challenges facing the students. This allows the professor to translate that first-hand knowledge and experience to the distance learner as well.
There are a few disadvantages to distance learning colleges. At some colleges, not all courses are offered in the distance learning programs. Due to the nature of the course or the availability of a professor, some courses may not be available. Also, distance learning courses do not allow for the immediate feedback of a professor. There is not raising the hand and getting an answer immediately. As the student can work at their convenience to do the course assignments, professors answer questions and review assignments on line at their convenience. Also, oral communication skills are not nurtured in the distance learning setting.
The student considering a distance learning college degree should weigh the advantages and disadvantages and determine the best educational choice for their personality, time, effort, and money. Also, if the student is already in a working environment, determining the acceptability of a distance learning degree by their employer is important. However, if the distance learning college is accredited, most employers will honor the degree.
